Machine Love: Video Games, AI, and Contemporary Art
マシン・ラブ:ビデオゲーム、AIと現代アート
As virtual spaces and the real world become connected, and artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly advances, new technologies are quickly permeating our daily lives, especially accelerating activities in virtual spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, looking back, technology and art have always run parallel throughout history, as seen in computer art and video art. While recent developments in video games and AI offer artists a whole new range of creative possibilities, generative AI also poses a threat to human creativity. These trends are receiving significant attention in the context of contemporary art. This exhibition showcases around 50 contemporary art pieces that utilize technologies such as game engines, AI, virtual reality (VR), and even generative AI that may surpass human creativity. In these works, various data from digital spaces serve as materials, presenting new aesthetics and image-making techniques, introducing virtual characters and avatars liberated from the gender and racial identities of real society, and visualizing surreal landscapes. Despite adopting these new methods, at the core of artistic expression lies an in-depth exploration of universal concepts of life and death, ethical issues, environmental challenges faced by the modern world, historical interpretation, and diversity.
