On March 24, 1185 (Juei 4), the young Emperor Antoku, at the age of just 8, drowned himself in Dan-no-Ura and was buried in Akama Shrine.
This event marked the beginning of the 'Jorō Sanpai,' where court ladies would visit the shrine on this commemorative day. The three-day event is famous for the saying, 'Seki's former emperor, Kokura's Gion; if it doesn't rain, gold rains down.' The magnificent procession attracts a large crowd, filling the streets.
