"Bonten (ぼんてん) Bayai" is a traditional event handed down as a ritual for a bountiful harvest, held annually on May 1st. When the paper-decorated Bonten, offered at the front of the shrine, is thrown into the crowd by the priest, participants fiercely compete for it. The first person to plant the bamboo stem into the ground is awarded the Bonten and is allowed to take it back to the district. It is designated as an important intangible cultural asset of Miyagi.
