Ko-suzume Lion
小雀獅子
Every year on May 3rd, the Ko-suzume lion dance is dedicated at the Fuji Shrine's annual festival. As the sounds of flutes and drums, commonly known as "Overko," resonate, the lion appears and begins to dance quietly facing the gods at the four directions. The dance is heroic and lively, featuring acrobatic moves like riding on shoulders. The lion dances swiftly as if it were a spirit. Eventually, a Go board is presented before the lion, treating it as a field. With keen interest, the lion leaps gracefully onto the board, praying for a bountiful harvest of grains, and elegantly performs its dance. 【Origin of Ko-suzume Lion】It is said that the Ko-suzume Lion Dance began in the 13th year of the Tenshō era (1585) during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, when the retainers hiding in this area dedicated the dance to the Fuji Shrine. The dance is characterized by its intense yet elegant and intricate movements. Today, it is preserved by the "Ko-suzume Lion Preservation Society," where young people pass on its advanced techniques.
