It is said that during the Momoyama period, Yamagata Castle Lord Mogami Yoshiaki started the plant market. This period not only coincides with the festival of the Kokubunji Yakushido but is also the best time for transplanting trees. Plant vendors from the Kanto region and other places line up their stalls, making it one of the three largest plant markets in Japan, alongside Kumamoto and Osaka.
