Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine Daidaikagura Prayer Festival

宇都宮二荒山神社 太々神楽祈祷祭
This is a kagura performance offering that has continued since the mid-Edo period. It belongs to the Edo system's Kanda-ryu (originating in Asakusa's Wakayama) school, and is referred to as the Miyabiryu Daidaikagura at the shrine. It's offered every year on the 28th of January, May, and September. In times when there were few entertainments, kagura was one of the amusements for people, and it is said that people of all ages crowded the shrine precincts. Today, it continues to be protected by the Kagura Preservation Society as a traditional folk art.
