Hakkai Mountain Fire-Walking Festival & Mountain Opening Ceremony
八海山火渡大祭・八海山山開き
The sacred peak of Mount Hakkai, with a history of over 1200 years, is the largest mountain pilgrimage site in Echigo. Every early summer, during the mountain opening ceremony, ascetics dressed in white robes perform the powerful Shinto ritual of fire-walking, accompanied by chanting, attracting many devotees from afar. After the fire-walking ritual, the Hakkai Mountain Fortune Mochi Throwing event is grandly held.
