Jagamaita in Mamata
間々田のじゃがまいた
The 'Jagamaita' in Mamata is a unique festival held in Mamata, Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, which retains a strong dragon god faith. This festival, considered an important intangible folk cultural asset in Japanese culture, is held before rice planting to pray to the gods for adequate rain and wind. It also includes wishes for a bountiful harvest and the expulsion of diseases. The venue is Mamata Hachimangu Shrine, accessible by local community bus or on foot.
The main highlight of the festival is a parade of giant snake-shaped objects, which create an overwhelming impact on onlookers. Additionally, many local traditional music performances and stalls offer a rich cultural experience to visitors.
As a limited attraction, there are special rituals and local culinary experiences available during the festival. This unique event offers participants a special experience.
When attending, it is highly recommended to take commemorative photos with the snake objects or enjoy special gourmet food made with local ingredients. These are the best ways to fully enjoy the event.
