The Architecture of Sou Fujimoto: Primordial Future Forest
藤本壮介の建築:原初・未来・森
Sou Fujimoto (born in 1971, Hokkaido) has design offices in Tokyo, Paris, and Shenzhen, and has undertaken a variety of projects worldwide, ranging from private residences to universities, commercial facilities, hotels, and complex structures.
Gaining attention with the "Aomori Prefectural Museum of Art Design Competition" in 2000, he has since completed projects such as the "Musashino Art University Museum & Library" (2010, Tokyo), "Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013" (London), and more recently, the apartment complex "L'Arbre Blanc (White Tree)" (2019, Montpellier, France) and the music complex "House of Hungarian Music" (2021, Budapest), earning high acclaim. Currently, he is serving as the venue design producer for the "Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai," making him one of Japan's most notable architects today.
This exhibition marks Fujimoto's first large-scale solo exhibition. It comprehensively introduces projects from his early days to ongoing global projects, providing an overview of his quarter-century journey, architectural characteristics, and thoughts. The exhibition features not only models, design drawings, and completion photos but also large models and prototypes (experimental models) that allow experiential installations and spaces, making it a unique exhibition in a contemporary art museum where anyone, not just those in architecture, can experience the essence of Fujimoto's architecture. Additionally, Fujimoto's proposals for future urban images attempt to explore the existence and potential of architecture.
Considering the environment, changing relationships among people, the function of connecting divided communities, and lifestyles influenced by technological advancement, today's architecture and cities are required to fulfill more roles than ever before. How can architecture change our lives in such an era? We will think together through Fujimoto's practice.
