Uemura Shoen: A Retrospective
生誕150年記念 上村松園
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Uemura Shoen, renowned for her bijin-ga (beautiful women paintings), we are holding the "Uemura Shoen: A Retrospective"
During a time when female artists were still rare, Uemura Shoen (1875–1949) built her reputation through extraordinary efforts. Shoen, who showed her remarkable talent at a young age, continued painting for over 60 years from the Meiji to Showa periods, forging a unique path as a leading figure in portrait painting. Her works, which are based on in-depth studies of classical Japanese paintings such as ukiyo-e, and are infused with rich knowledge of traditional arts and classical literature, continue to deeply impress viewers with their elegance and purity.
This exhibition, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Uemura Shoen's birth, will introduce her artistic career through a collection of precious works. It is an opportunity to revisit the true value of Shoen's art, who was the first woman to receive the Order of Culture and left an indelible mark on modern art history.
