Monet: The Late Waterscapes
モネ 睡蓮のとき
Approximately 50 works, including 7 pieces being shown for the first time in Japan, gather in springtime Kyoto, making for the ultimate Monet exhibition.
Into the landscape, surrounded by the large screens of "Water Lilies."
Claude Monet (1840-1926), one of the representative painters of Impressionism, captured the transitions of nature on canvas through his keen eye for light and color. However, in his later years, his art became more abstract and internalized.
Monet's later years were also a period of many challenges, including the death of his beloved family, his own eye ailments, and World War I. Amidst these difficulties, his greatest source of inspiration became the water lily pond in the garden of his home in Giverny, where trees, the sky, and light were reflected as one on the water's surface. The concept of covering the room’s walls with massive canvases depicting this theme created a "grand decorative painting" that occupied Monet's mind until his last days. This exhibition centers on the numerous large canvases of "Water Lilies" created during this process of trial and error measuring up to 2 meters.
This time, about 50 works from the Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris, including those being shown for the first time in Japan, have come to Japan. Additionally, works held throughout Japan are included, showcasing the pinnacle of Monet's late art. It presents a rare opportunity for Japan to host the largest gathering of "Water Lilies" to date.
