Ukiyo-e Super Creator: Kuniyoshi Utagawa Exhibition
浮世絵スーパークリエイター 歌川国芳展
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. Kuniyoshi was a disciple of Utagawa Toyokuni I, the founder of the Utagawa school, and became popular with his "Suikoden Series", which was based on Chinese classics, gaining fame as "Kuniyoshi the Warrior Print Artist". Subsequently, he not only focused on warrior prints but also created a variety of works, including bijin-ga (prints of beautiful women), historical paintings, and landscapes incorporating Western painting techniques, showcasing his talent. Kuniyoshi's ukiyo-e, with its innovative imagination and outstanding humor, resonated with many during the tumultuous end of the Edo period, and in recent years, he has gained high popularity both domestically and internationally as a genius artist who paved the way for a new era of ukiyo-e. This exhibition will showcase about 200 works in various genres, including the warrior prints Kuniyoshi excelled at, as well as caricatures and bijin-ga, presenting the charming world of Kuniyoshi. In addition, for the first time in Hokkaido, a spin-off work focusing on Utagawa Kuniyoshi, "Kuniyoshi Immersive Art", will be shown, collaborating with the immersive exhibition "Moving Ukiyo-e Exhibition", which is touring domestically and internationally, including in Nagoya, Tokyo, and Milan, Italy.
